This seems like a good starting topic.

The first console I ever got was a pirated version of the Japanese Famicom (around 1988). It was called the "Family Game" and I never realized it was a pirate until a few years later when I got the NES and did some research on its predecessor.

Good way to start indeed!

My first console was a Sega Mega Drive, i loved that console, then my dad sold it! :'(

Yeah, the NES was my first as well. Then I got a Sega Genesis and all the kids were selling their Nintendos and games to get Sega or SNES games. I wanted to but my dad wouldn't let me. Hey Harriw, why did your dad sell your Mega Drive?

I keep asking him that question and he doesnt tell me! sad.gif

I used to play the track and field game because you could cheat so much in that game. Like in the long jump, all you had to do was jump off the pad and jump back on when you wanted to land. Or if you were racing just beat the pad with your hands to make you go really fast. Those were the days. hihi.gif
Boomer
Mine would of been some Grandstand bat and ball thingy.Pong+footy+tennis, you know the type of thing.
That was followed by an Atari VCS and then pretty much everything else since give or take a few makes.

In fact, i have been collecting old consoles and early games and have quite a few now, i also recently just purchased an arcade machine Mame cabinet to play the classics again biggrin.gif

If you want any pics i will slap some up as i have been taking pics of a lot of bits i have although there are things in boxes i have yet to open lol.

Hey Boomer, maybe you could start a new topic and post pictures of your collection and everyone else can then post theirs thumbsup.gif

I got an Atari VCS (2600) when they were popular the first time around, and even bought another (a 2600jr.) when they were on their way down in 1991! The shop staff must have been curious as to why some old fart was buying up 2600 games in the early 90s. biggrin.gif

My first ever console is the good 'ol SNES! got it with super mario kart and mario allstars. Still love and play it to this day!

SNES is one of the best retro consoles to get because they are cheap to pick up and there are so many excellent pre 3D era games. Plus it doesn't have the cart connector problem of the NES.
usr.c
I'm trying to get hold of an original "dog-bone" NES that loads cartridges from the top. That version doesn't have the blinking problem of the later NES.

Another console that I'm having a hard time getting hold of for cheap is the ColecoVision.

my first system was NES, i played mario like there was no tomorrow original.gif then i played duck hunt and i if i had spare bullets i would shoot the stupid dog original.gif
BlueTearDrop
lol, good. someone needs to give that dog what he deserves....

...a couple of days ago i pulled out the old nintendo, and after many tries of getting the old thing to work...you know the routine...it turned on and i was all 'yay!' and i played lolo forever! i love those old puzzle games...nothing beats a blue dot that can move squares! lol....

The toploading NES is the one they should have introduced to start with. The earlier gray box with the faulty connectors really sucks! What also annoyed me was when Nintendo introduced the SNES and it wasn't backwards compatible, even though the famicom & super famicom in Japan were! angry.gif
usr.c
I don't think the connectors were faulty, unless you're referring to a batch of them that were like that. It's just the fact the cartridge slides into the connector horizontally that causes the problem everyone refers to as 'blinking'.
Iron Gland
Is there any way to fix that. Because I just use a can of air every once in a while but that doesn't gaurantee it.
usr.c
Best method I've found is to wipe the cartridge pins with any alcohol/water solution and then slide it in in one go. The alcohol on the cartridge pins will also clean the connector pins.

For me, that fixes the problem for at least a few months.

My first console was a Sega Genesis. I know, a little newer than a NES but I'm 11 years old. I want to play retro games (unlike any other people in my school. People buy the Mega Man Anniversery Collection and call it sucky because its a bunch of old games. Duh!) but an Atari 2600 is hard to find. XD

but an Atari 2600 is hard to find

Check out eBay. There were literally hundreds up for auction/sale when I bought mine. Plus, if you're not too picky about the chasse (woody, VCS, etc...), you might be able to get one for under $10.

There were several restyles of the Atari 2600 console, the 2600jr is one to watch out for because it is very small (just slightly larger than a VHS cassette) and it tends to be cheaper to buy than the collectible 2600s with the woodgrain.

Or what about an Atari 7800? The first console in the world to be backwards compatible without an adaptor. It can play all the 2600 games, plus it's own 7800 titles. The 7800 is also available on ebay, it is a bit more expensive than a 2600 because of rarity, but you do get two consoles in the one machine.

Both consoles and their carts are very tough reliability wise, I have both. original.gif
