JAPANESE FIRM Toshiba said it has introduced digital rights management (DRM) using an SD memory card.

The card includes an encrypted key that is downloaded and then can be used to swap content between different media but only by using the key.

The firm gives an example of DVDs which can be freely copied and distributed but only with the key on the SD.

If the plan is so cunning, then no doubt the DVD makers will start ridding the world of the iniquitous area protection systems that prevent us from using CDs and DVDs we've bought in one place when we get back home.

Tosh claims that users with the DRM key will have full use of the content. If they want to transfer content to other people, then they can do that too, but will have to pay for it when they try and access it, whether it's held on DVD, CD, hard drives or flash memory.
