When I turn my pc on it powers up, the fan starts but no boot up occurs. The hard disk light is on continuously.

Does it beep? Do u get the display? Does it pass Hard Disk /CD drive detection section?

No I get no beeps, no tests of CD drives etc. My screen stays completeley blank throughout.

I think it's a faulty motherboard, if u have not added any hardware recently.

actually, my money is on bad hdd instead...... mobo could be the problem as well but hdd are way more prone to failure and although mobos do break... hdd's break WAY more often

Think twice! If it was a bad HDD, it would have said "no system disk" or sth.
