I am running a simple sequencer application on my PC (Win 98SE, 550Mhz processor, 20 Gb hard disk) that generates drum and bass lines.

I recently installed a software update, which basically didn't work. So I reinstalled my old program version which previously worked fine. Now however i find that the sequencer no longer keeps the proper tempo (which was one of the problems with the updated version).

I have reinstalled several times, tried defragging and repairing the hard disk etc, but still the problem persists.

Somehow the installation of the update caused a permanent change in my system which is now affecting the running of the older program despite my having uninstalled the update and reinstalled the older version. No other programs are affected apart from this single application.

Can anybody point me in the right direction to restore my system without resorting to a clean install or reinstalling a backup which would cause a lot of extra work!.

Try using advanced uninstaller http://www.innovative.go.ro/purchase_disco...ller_214695.htm you have 20 free runs before having to buy.
this app finds all the little files left over from uninstalled software and allows you to delete them. after using this you can then try reinstalling-----hopefully this works wink.gif

Yes i had a look at the installer. I actually have a program that does the same thing - Ultra WinCleaner 2000 - and it still hasn't solved the problem.

Could it be a registry entry or something else technical that's causing this problem? Any (good) ideas welcome - perhaps someone out there has had a similar problem with a different application.

The config settings, etc could be still stored in the registry, so may have to delete the old keys. (I would not dare mess with the registry myself too much as this may make the system unbootable, so it’s at your own risk)

That’s one good thing with win XP (maybe 2000 as well), System restore

Definitely! I've successfully used it on a number of occasions. PC Plodder, since you seem to be using Windows 9x, I'd recommend you get in touch with the software's author and get them to tell exactly which files were overwritten/created during the installation of the update.

Thanks for your help (again).

I have had copious correspondence with the software writer. In fact he has sent me numerous different versions of the update with various fixes - none of which have solved the problem. He also tells me that he is running the program OK on Win 98, and I am the only Win 98 user with the problem.

But anyway, i shall contact him again and ask for the list of system files installed............

Incidentally, suppose i were to go into the registry and delete all the entries pertaining to the install of this program, do you think this would solve the problem?

argh...Seemed to have missed your last post PC Plodder. crazy.gif

I don't know if you've fixed the problem or not, but before you try removing any files from the registry do a back up of it. If the registry is the only place were Windows calls these files then removing them may resolve the issue.
