when I restarted my computer today it said system file missing system\config\system press r to restore using your original xp cd or something along those lines so I put in my xp cd and chose the option "r" when prompted it analyzed and restored some system regestry settings. I restarted I was prompted at startup that system registry settings had successfully been restored. I don't know the cause but it seemed to be fixed only one problem. I can't connect to the internet anymore. somehow all my internet settings were overwriten and I can't get them back. I tried running the xp system restore program to get them back but all the restore points are blank. I tried reinstalling my internet program but the modems aren't working properley. I just get errors, and all of my network connection are wipped.
Does anyone know what is going on here? I am clueless, I am on my borthers labtop unableto even dial out on my pc. any imput would be muuuch appericiated. thanks for any prompt responces to get me back on line.

I am going to add some more info as I find it, so that maybe we can get some ideas going here.

when I click on the network connections all my connections are gone as I stated above so I click on creat a new connection when I get to the "how do you want to connect to the internet dialog the "connect using dial up modem option as well as the second optonconnect using a brodband . . . " are both not available for checking. When I try to dial out using juno I get "Microsoft Windos does not have any modems listed for this computer . . . "
when I go into the control pannel and click on modems my modems shows as being installed and working properley and enabled

when I restart know every time at startup I get "Windows - Registry Recovery: One of the files containing the system's registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or alternate copy. the recovery was successful." this is the same prompt I got after restoring the sytem file from the xp cd and I get this prompt every time I restart windows.

well since nobody had any ideas and I was feeling helpless and ancious I went ahead and restored a month old copy of my pc from a ghost image. and I am back up and running perfictley, it was my first time actually using a norton ghost image to solve my problem but since my last back up was so recent it made since to do this time. the process was easy quick and worked wonderfully.

I just woke up and saw your post, but I'm glad you managed to work it out jerblaster thumbs_up.gif

In the future, you could use System File Checker (Start, Run, type sfc/scannow) to restore corrupted system files.

On of my friends once got hit with a virus and had to reinstall Windows from the 6 startup disks. However, even after Windows loaded the connections would not show up, so he couldn't connect to the local area network. A Windows reinstall sorted it out, but a SFC would have been just as effective.
