Can 1+1 equal 1 and still be mathemetically correct? :)

Found this solution on doing a search.
Given a = b then this implies a - b + b = b Now divide both sides by (a-b) and we have a - b + b b --------- = ----- (a-b) (a-b) Then reduce the left side to be b b 1 + ----- = ----- (a-b) (a-b) Then subtract b/(a-b) from both sides and you have 1 = 0 Then add one to both sides and you have 1 + 1 = 1 Is that the way you did it BOB -------------------- REGARDS

Mine was a bit different. Anyway, do you happen to know where the "grey area" is in your solution? :)

NO! I know there is a flaw in it.
Quote from Dr.Eathen Well the first thing to say is that this cannot be done. You cannot use CORRECT mathematics to prove something that is untrue. Secondly, yes I have constructed a proof. My challenge to you is to find the flaw. (I have seen more sophisticated proofs where the flaw is harder to find, but each one essentially has the same flaw that mine has.) Indeed! The grey area is the part where you subtract 'a' from 'b' because technically you're dividing by a zero.
Here's another one: a = b a^2 = ab a^2 - b^2 = ab-b^2 (a-b)(a+b) = b(a-b) a+b = b b+b = b 2b = b 2 = 1 * ^: To the power of -------------------- ![]() ![]() Things that I don't suck at: Photography (flickr, JPG Mag), "Don't bail; the best gold is at the bottom of barrels of crap!" -Randy Pausch I have people-skills goddamnit!
